Jeff Leonard, a lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, was born in 1961. After training as a classical French hornist, he started playing electric bass and graduated with a degree in jazz studies from Western Washington University in 1984. He soon moved to Portland to start a seven year tenure with the Tom Grant Band, and since 1992 has worked with John Nilsen. He has also recorded three CDs with his group Val Gardena for Mercury Records, and teaches at Portland State University and Lewis & Clark College.
